Dear all, I have just started looking into Java Faces technology and I attempted to deploy the "crossbar-stylish" example into Sun's J2EE Application Server 8.1. The WAR file cann't be deployed as it is. Anyone knows what modifications need to be done? Best regards, Nikos |

I've updated the two Crossbar example applications and released them on Sourceforge as version 0.8.1. This fixes the problem with "first-time form submission" discussed on the JSF Forum at http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=427&thread=416345 I'm still seeing a problem with the Safari web browser (on the Mac). Submitting the form always causes a redisplay of the form. It works with IE5.2/Mac and IE6/PC. And strangely, it works with Safari when I am running the app on my own machine (a Mac) but not on the server (linux) where the demo app is hosted. I'd love it if you and others would try the demo apps at http://www.crossbar.info/ and tell me if they work (or not) with your browser. -- Daniel ke...@fo... NEWER NEWS (Today) The second Crossbar example application is now fully documented and available for download at http://www.crossbar.info/. Crossbar-Stylish is a Java Server Faces example application that uses Cascading Style Sheets. The application implements a stylesheet switcher that allows you to choose from several styles and immediately see the changed appearance of the pages. The Crossbar-Stylish application is designed to use stylesheets that have been written for the Movable Type web logging application. There is a large community of designers who are actively creating alternative stylesheets for Movable Type. Any of these open source, freeware, shareware, or commercial stylesheets will work with the Crossbar-Stylish application. The Crossbar-Stylish application demonstrates a page structure that easily can be recast as a single-column, two-column, or three-column layout; with banner, sidebar, content area, and footer. In many cases, major structural changes (such as moving a list of links from page right to page left) can be accomplished with minor changes to include files and CSS stylesheet files. The application also includes a default stylesheet that restyles web forms for a more contemporary look. OLDER NEWS (Last week) Crossbar is a collection of example applications written for Java Server Faces (JSF) and Java Server Pages (JSP). The first release, Crossbar-Hello, is a basic JSF "Hello World" example that shows how to use Java logging and adds a project layout that accommodates builds using either Ant or Maven. It also shows how to obtain application context attributes for use in any class using the JSF ExternalContext class. Until six months ago, the project was a web reporting framework that layered on top of Struts. I've abandoned that approach in favor of using JSF to make small simple example applications that can be easily deconstructed and adapted for a variety of uses. Eventually, the web reporting functionality will return (hopefully in a simpler, friendlier way!). Please let me know if you have praise or complaints. -- Daniel ke...@fo... hey daniel I've downloaded jdk 1.4 so that I could run the latest version (instaed = of settling for the older 0.5.4 version)...and I'm just trying to run = through the simple demo(the one operating off of the sample database = that ships with the product) I'm able to access the welcome page...but many of the examples (and = links) just send me to the error.jsp page. only sortablecolumns example works it's kind of discouraging since I'm trying to evaluate the product to be = used in our enterprise portal how stable is this version? It is still available on sourceforge at=20 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D40307&release_id=3D= 109524. The only difference is logging. Look at the build.xml file for the 0.5.4 version and you'll see it changes the logging class import for each class. It would not be difficult to apply the same changes to the newer 0.7.3 version. --=20 Daniel ke...@fo... About the Crossbar Project: http://www.crossbar.info |

Brian,
You've got a good grasp on the Crossbar concept, even without
installing it (or having docs!).

Yes, most are, where there's presentation to the user. Here's the
corollary: most data intended for presentation fits a tabular data set.
That's where the CachedRowSet comes in. It's been neglected as if it
were some freakish JDBC extension (most people think of it only as
hyper JDBC ResultSet that makes its own connections). But it's ideal
for handing off result data sets from the Model to the Presentation
layer. Just about anything can be crammed somehow into columns and rows
with column labels and a table name. Once you've got a CachedRowSet
into the Presentation layer, you can write a custom tag that presents
the tabular data in any format you can think of. HTML tables are
obvious. But presentation formats can be Google-style search results
(like the Lucene example). Or a weblog (a pet project). Or graphical
charts. Or navigation menus. The Crossbar menuing system is driven by
data in a CachedRowSet. If you want to see what the menu table looks
like as a table instead of a DHTML menu, just use a Table tag to format
it instead of a Menu tag (that's what the Menu Diagnostic page does).
Since presentation formats tend to the universal, it makes sense to
share them as open source. For Crossbar, you could write a different
table tag for each kind of presentation format (they would all take a
CachedRowSet as input). I took that one step further and wrote a
generic table tag that accepts different formatters as plug-ins, so one
table tag can be used on any page and the Model can suggest what
formatter the table tag should use ("i'm a Model for a weblog so format
this CachedRowSet data like a weblog").

Hi Daniel! Thanks for your consideration! I haven't had a chance to install yet, I generally sign up for the mailing list a bit in advance just to see what = kind of traffic is going on, what people are talking about, a way to get = mentally prepared to put my head into it. I'm using EJB on JBoss and Struts for my application foundation, and am = just starting to get to the point where I can deploy applications. It's = pretty funny, I knew all the concepts of EJB, but never truly realized what a = huge hurdle it is to get started with. Anyway, that's behind me now though, = and I'm pretty happy with the results. So job one on any integration is = making sure that the source that I am merging in can work well with EJB, or how = they can be coaxed to work together. Cursory glance would indicate direct = JDBC database access, so I need to make sure that the entity bean caches are transactionally flushed to the DB so that Crossbar doesn't try to = traverse stale foreign keys while the entities are updating. The first application that I wouldn't mind integrating into something = like Crossbar is a simple app with Webalizer functionality. Since everyone = needs the ability to analyze web logs, this might be a really good sample app. = I don't know much about Crossbar yet, but of course it's a very = comfortable adoption path when you can integrate some existing code written with = "best practices" for the particular application, then organically modify and refactor to suit your own application needs. =20 In some regard, all applications are "reporting applications", so I = could also see how Crossbar functionality could become something of a = presentation API for the view. In other words, the end-user application code is sandwiched between Struts and Crossbar, with Crossbar forming the = eventual path to the end-user browser. =20 Anyway, I'm interested in your thoughts on all this. I've CC'd the = list, maybe there is some juicy bits that others might want to ponder as well. best, -b > -----Original Message----- > From: Daniel Kehoe [mailto:ke...@fo...] > Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 11:59 AM > To: Brian Topping > Subject: saw your crossbar-user subscription... >=20 >=20 > Thanks for your interest in Crossbar! >=20 > Do you have any comments or feedbacks? >=20 > Any problems installing? The Crossbar 0.7.3 release is now available at http://www.crossbar.info/. This is the first new release since April 2002. Version 0.7.3 is much easier to install and evaluate than previous versions. We are now using Tomcat to manage access to databases (a great new feature in Tomcat 4.1!). This release adds new functionality, including an example of reports generated by the Lucene search engine and role-based access to reports. Because of your previous interest in Crossbar, we'd love to have your feedback and comments! --=20 Daniel ke...@fo... About the Crossbar Project: http://www.crossbar.info |
