Brit thesaurus is a British English thesaurus for openoffice.org. It is a great improvement over the American version that comes with openoffice.
This release is for openoffice version 2 which has a different file format allowing for synonyms to be grouped by meaning. It is based on the American version with many American spellings changed to British, duplicates removed, and some definitions made clearer. More work is required but this is a good start! ... read more
I am working on the thesaurus for OpenOffice.org 2.0. Work is progressing niceley, and I hope to have an upload within a couple of weeks.
Brit thesaurus is a British English thesaurus for openoffice.org. It is a great improvement over the American version that comes with openoffice.
There is no reason to download this if you already have 0.2 installed. If you do not have version 0.2 installed and just want to download the thesaurus, you will want the bin package.
Version 0.2b changes are primarily in the way the thesaurus is put together
o It uses thescoder rather than thencode
o There is a -all package which contains lists of words
which were deleted from Moby, and changes that
were made, plus scripts that were used to manipulate
the thesaurus source.
o The source package is now easier for maintainers to

Version 0.2 contains many more entries, correcting a problem with version 0.1 where non existent entries were mapped to "A-bomb"!
The thesaurus is based on the Moby thesaurus, but has 41,405 deletions and 2747 changes. In addition many (about 40,000) words were added that already existed as synonyms but did not have entries of their own. More work is required but this is a good start!... read more
Ok I have made a preliminary release. I would welcome comments on how to improve the thesaurus.
This release will work with openoffice, but there is a bug in that there are some words that are mentioned as a synonym for another word, but do not have entries of their own. These words are given a default synonym list of the first entry which is 'A-bomb' I hope to fix this in the next week or so, and will upload the next version then. In the mean time please let me know of any words you wish to have added, removed or changed. I will create a forum to assist us in discussing this.
I have now created the flat file and need to convert it into openoffice format. I can not seem to compile the encode program on its own without having all of openoffice compiled.
I am sure it is possible, but its a matter of finding which libraries need compiling and compiling them, then linking them, and I dont have the kid of experience needed to do that, so I will have to compile the lot.
This means that it will be next weekend at the earliest before I get a working version. Such is life
Sourceforge project created. As I type this a script is deleting unwanted words from the thesaurus. Once this is complete (Probably tomorrow) I will upload the project, assuming I can work out how to use CVS. I also need to work out how to convert the thesaurus to the openoffice format.
