There's instructions here on changing the default java/javac: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java The important commands are: $ sudo update-alternatives --config java $ sudo update-alternatives --config javac As for the dependencies, I think it's a minimum one they're using for debian. They're very conservative there. :) Let me know if you run into any further issues.
