Mac OS X. I've done a search for csnd.jar with Spotlight and can't find it. I recently did a clean checkout of the entire blue source code from CVS and it wouldn't compile, complaining: build.xml:94: Could not create task or type of type: junit I realize all I probably have to do is install junit, but then again I thought blue always had a dependency for junit, so why is this cropping up now? Hi All, I haven't used blue long enough to know whether this is a new problem, but when I choose Script>Jython>Prompt from the menu system, I get a gnome window with a cursor in it. I can only type a line of text into it - nothing else happens! Hi Steve, Thanks! Why use macros when I could use UDO's? Well I don't think I could use UDO's. Essentially I want two radically different versions of Lily-aware instruments with code looking something like: #ifdef LilyWriter -- code that writes stuff to a python list that LilyWriter then uses -- #else -- code that actually produces sound --- #end This way I can change the behaviour of these instruments simply by toggling the activation of the LilyWriter instrument. Also the instruments could be used as is in Blue projects that did not contain LilyWriter. There _are_ other ways of achieving this, but all of them seem quite messy to me and are not as efficient at run time. Also the #ifdef construct makes it visually clear which code goes with which version of the instrument. Hi Bernard, Thanks for mentioning the bug with the pre block processing (number 1). I took a look and have fixed the processing. It is now passing the lines with original formatting (it was previously trimming all lines). This is in CVS and I have placed a build at: http://www.kunstmusik.com/blue_0.123.0_beta_installer.jar http://www.kunstmusik.com/blue_0.123.0_beta.zip As for 2, I'm not sure I could get to anything like that anytime soon. Number 3, well, I could probably add something like a top. As a side note, what I'm wondering is, why use macros when you could use UDO's? Thanks, steven On Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 2:39 PM, Bernard Hurley <be...@ph...> wrote: > Hi All, > > First I will explain what I am doing. I am into music for electronic + > live instruments. Hi All, Sorry to be a pain, but I have another request! I have just began thinking of the effect of time warping on what I am doing. I have been using the values of p2 and p3 in my code generating Lilypond, but I have realised that what I really want is the valued before any Csound time-warping. So far I haven't found out how to get at these in Csound itself - although apparently they are sent to the instrument. However Blue obviously knows what these values are, so another possibility would be to have blue variables <p2orig> and <p3orig> that I could use as p-fields. Note that it is the values after blue note processing that I need so I can't simply duplicate p2 and p3! Thanks Bernard ps. Did anyone spot the typo in my original missive? Hi All, First I will explain what I am doing. I am into music for electronic + live instruments. The basic idea is that some instruments could "represent" live instruments and could produce actual sound while I am composing, but could go into "LilyPond" mode, turning off their sound output but producing a LilyPond score instead when I finally produce my audio output. I am developing a "LilyWriter" instrument: A] In it's global ORC tab it would contain stuff like: ;[pre]{ #define LilyWriter #<INSTR_ID># pyinit pyruni {{ def hello(): \t print "hello - let's see if this works!!!" #------- lots of python code goes here ------- }} ;} "What's the '\t' for?" I hear you ask. Well, if it is not there, the python ends in the CSD file as: def hello(): print "hello - let's see if this works!!!" -- etc -- Python doesn't like this at all!! This leads to my first request: Request 1: would it be possible for blue NOT to reformat the code in an instrument's global ORC tab? - At least inside a Csound string of the form {{ ---- }} If you actually type this code into blue you will find that the Python gets highlighted as if it were Csound. Leading to: Request 2: Could syntax highlighting be turned off inside such strings? B] The "LilyWriter" global SCO tab contains: i <INSTR_ID> 0 <TOTAL_DUR> Now other instruments can be made LilyPond aware, just by using constructions like: #ifdef $LilyWriter ----- some stuff #endif This can be done inside the instrument itself or in the global ORC tab of the instrument. The upshot of this is that if the "LilyWriter" instrument is included in the orchestra, then it can write the LilyPond score. I won't go into details but I it is starting to work! If it is not included then no score is produced and maybe the Lily-aware instruments can produce sound. All this requires is ticking one box in blue - quite cool! However there is one place where this trick doesn't work - this is in the Global orchestra for the whole project. Code typed into the "Global Orchestra" box on the "global" tab for the project appears in the CSD file BEFORE code tagged with [pre] in an instrument - so it is not possible to use the macro $LilyWriter at this point. This leads to my third request: Request 3: Could [pre] be implemented so that it placed code BEFORE the project's global orchestra code? On second thought this might break some people's blue projects - so maybe a new tag [top] could be implemented. Requests 1 and 2 are not that urgent - being a matter of an ugly hack and eye candy respectively, but it would be REALLY USEFUL to me if 3, could be implemented. Thanks for reading all this! Regards, Bernard |

Hi Bernard, I've taken a look and have to say that I'm not very fond of the idea of using <<name>> as it seems confusing and may have errors, say if you had a parameter named <name> in a BSB instrument. If you need to use the instrument number that a named instrument uses, I think you can get it by using p1, which should have the number assigned to the instrument. Handling + in names makes sense, but the rest I think should be do-able with just using Csound's standard named instrument feature. steven On Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 6:13 AM, Bernard Hurley <be...@ph...> wrote: > Hi Steve, > > Thinking about it, a solution to using instrument names in blue might be > as follows (I want to think this out before submitting it to the > tracker): > > 1) Have an (optional) "symbolic name" field in an instrument > definition that is stored in the library. > > 2) If the symbolic name is (say) "flute" allow <<flute>> to > substitute the same substitution <INSTR_ID>, but do it anywhere > in the sco or orc (this would involve a bit of preprocessing > -but not much). Hi Steve, Thinking about it, a solution to using instrument names in blue might be as follows (I want to think this out before submitting it to the tracker): 1) Have an (optional) "symbolic name" field in an instrument definition that is stored in the library. 2) If the symbolic name is (say) "flute" allow <<flute>> to substitute the same substitution <INSTR_ID>, but do it anywhere in the sco or orc (this would involve a bit of preprocessing -but not much). Similarly <N<flute>> could do the same substitution as <INSTR_NAME>. Apart from doing things like referring to instruments by name in the sco, it would make it much easier to use a whole range of opcodes - "mgassign", "prealloc", "subinstr" and "event" to mention just a few. For example you could write code such as: event "i", <<flute>>, 3, 10 There would be a problem of name clashes, but this is the case anyway if you wish to name the instruments. The same problem occurs with macros. With my proposal (unlike with macros) it would be possible for blue to detect this and issue a warning. With a system like this there would be no real need for non-numeric IDs, unless one wanted to use "+" names, but I don't think this is much of an issue. The Instr ID could then just be allowed to take care of itself. Cheers Bernard |

Hi Steve, I'm not a fan of macros in general. I agree that a full blown macro processor would cause more problems than it would solve. But I do like to use names to refer to instruments by names. Given that names are not stored in the instrument library, the easiest thing to so is use a simple macro. When I first saw the name field in the instrument definition, I thought it might be for giving the instrument a name - an instrument can have both a numerical ID and a name. "pre" does not push the code high up enough in the global orchestra. The macro really needs to go before the code defined in the "Global" tab in the definition of the whole score. Maybe a "macro" variable could be used to do this. "pre" does not work at all for the score. Hi Bernard, I'm not a fan of macros and don't think they are really necessary when using blue, plus currently the Csound system of macro's does not have a single macro system and I don't particularly want to spend time to create a macro system in blue when I think it would lead to creating harder to reuse projects and reduces maintainability. Also, the idea of implementing a macro system is really not so simple as it would have to get run inline on every instrument generated and all score generated for each soundObject as blue would need to expand macros before further processing to apply the time behavior of the soundObject or the noteProcessors on the sObj or the soundLayer, and so on and so on for all nestings within polyObjects. For your case, if you want to use these kinds of macro's, you could put them in the global orc and sco of your instrument using pre blocks to push it above the rest of the global orc: http://csounds.com/stevenyi/blue/usermanual/html/ch02s07s03.html You could probably add the prealloc command with the instrument definition too if it's something that is associated with the instrument. steven On Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 1:19 PM, Bernard Hurley <be...@ph...> wrote: > Hi, > > I'm not sure if this or the user list is the correct one for this. Hi Bernard, Please add this information to the bug for the previous one in the tracker. I'm thinking it'll be easier just to check if + exists in the name and to just remove it when using it for <INSTR_NAME> and in the global variable names. I'll probably go with that versus an additional checkbox as I can't think of a case where you'd actually want the + in the name. Hi Bernard, For number 1, I'm not sure if this is a good idea as it could cause problems when dragging in multiple copies of the same instrument to a project. It seems to me clearer to have it not be a part of the library as you could have many instruments with the same instr ID or might import someone else's which has the same instr ID as yours. If you feel strongly about it though, put in a request in the request tracker and I'll revisit it when I can get through the more pressing issues. As for issue 2, could you post a bug in the bug tracker for this? Support for + names was never implemented though it shouldn't take long to make it behave as you report. Hi, There is no nice way to prepend an instrument name with "+". If you try setting the Instr ID to something like "+MyInstr", then: 1) This is not compatible with the mixer (see previous email). 2) It means <INSTR_ID> and <INSTR_NAME> cannot be used as expected, since they preserve the "+" One solution would be to have an extra tick box for "prepend +" on the instrument definition, and use that to add the "+" to the "instr" code. Regards, Bernard |

Hi, Two issues with named instruments: 1) It would be nice if the ID of an instrument could be saved to the instrument library if it happens to be a name (obviously you would not wish to do it for a number) 2) CSound allows you to prepend an instrument name with a + sign as in: instr +OutputInstr However this is not consistent with the blue mixer. If you try to use the mixer you get errors like: error: illegal character +, line 12: ga_bluemix_+OutputInstr_0 init 0 ^ The problem here is that the "+" is preserved in the generated code. It would be nice if this did not happen. Thanks, Bernard |

Hi, I'm not sure if this or the user list is the correct one for this. I have been adding lines like: #define flute #<INSTR_ID># to both the "Global Orchestra" and the "Global Score" tabs. There are two issues: 1) It would be nice just to add this once. 2) More importantly, the macro definition is not placed high enough in the global score for me to use code like: prealloc $flute, 5 A solution would be to have a "Macro" tab that would put identical code near the top of each section. Hi Michael, Adding to the @author tag is good but you might want to also added yourself to the copyright of the file in the GNU license part of the header as I think that your contributions are your copyright technically. Gawd, that took long enough, I know, but I finally added my self as author to the files I edited, and added the GNU license to that Popup class. I'm, uh, assuming you meant that I added myself in the @author Javadoc tags in the source code? If not, let me know. Thanks, Michael ----- Original Message ---- From: Steven Yi <ste...@gm...> To: blue developer list <blu...@li...> Sent: Friday, February 1, 2008 11:01:10 PM Subject: Re: [Bluemusic-devel] Tracker issues Hi Michael, Sorry for the late reply! Work completely wiped me out this week. I wasn't sure what files you had edited but I found cvs2cl (http://www.red-bean.com/cvs2cl) and ran that against the blue cvs. For the changes you did I got: 2008-01-18 16:16 mbechard * src/main/java/blue/mixer/: ChannelPanel.form, ChannelPanel.java: Made chanel level label an editable text field after double-clicking. 2008-01-18 10:51 mbechard * src/main/java/blue/orchestra/editor/blueSynthBuilder/: BSBFileSelectorPopup.java, BSBFileSelectorView.java: Added "clear" functionality to file selector widget via popup menu 2008-01-17 10:05 mbechard * src/main/java/blue/ArrangementEditPanel.java: Made Instr ID column resizable Thanks! steven On Jan 30, 2008 12:37 PM, Michael Bechard <got...@ya...> wrote: > Ok, well, now I have a bit of a problem. The machine I worked on to edit those files is at my now ex-employer's building. I can't remember exactly which files I edited, and strangely enough, I can't seem to query CVS to give me any information on the files I've checked in in the past month; the query works, but nothing comes up. Actually, I requested to see any activity for the past month and nothing showed up. I query for any activity by myself, and only the stuff from over two years ago shows up. > > Anyway, I'd appreciate any assistance you could offer. I can remember some of the files, I think, but it would be better if I could pull a report on the commit activity and see which ones I did for sure. > > Michael > > ----- Original Message ---- > From: Steven Yi <ste...@gm...> > To: blue developer list <blu...@li...> > Sent: Saturday, January 19, 2008 1:19:50 AM > Subject: Re: [Bluemusic-devel] Tracker issues > > > Hi > Michael, > > Thanks! > Please > do > add > yourself > to > the > authors > list > to > each > file > you > worked > on > as > well > as > add > entries > to > the > changeLog > too > so > when > doing > releases > we > can > track > what > changes > were. > Also, > please > update > the > tracker > in > blue > for > those > items > you > completed > so > that > others > know > what > has > been > addressed > already. > > Thanks > for > your > time > and > work! > > steven > > > On > Jan > 18, > 2008 > 1:20 > PM, > Michael > Bechard > <got...@ya...> > wrote: > > > Alright, > these > are > done > and > checked > in. > I > also > made > a > change > to > the > build.xml > file, > correcting > the > "run" > target > to > use > current > library > references. > > > > > Michael > > > > > ----- > Original > Message > ---- > > > From: > Steven > Yi > <ste...@gm...> > > > To: > blue > developer > list > <blu...@li...> > > > > > Sent: > Wednesday, > January > 16, > 2008 > 11:37:57 > AM > > > Subject: > Re: > [Bluemusic-devel] > Tracker > issues > > > > > > > Awesome, > thanks! > > > > > On > Jan > 16, > 2008 > 9:36 > AM, > Michael > Bechard > <got...@ya...> > wrote: > > > > > Ok, > I'll > work > on > these > then. > If > I > want > to > work > on > others, > I'll > let > > > you > know > here. > > > > > > > > > ----- > Original > Message > ---- > > > > > From: > Steven > Yi > <ste...@gm...> > > > > > To: > blue > developer > list > <blu...@li...> > > > > > > > > > Sent: > Wednesday, > January > 16, > 2008 > 11:27:01 > AM > > > > > Subject: > Re: > [Bluemusic-devel] > Tracker > issues > > > > > > > > > > > > > This > bug > would > be > nice > to > get > out: > > > > > > > > > > > http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1861016&group_id=74382&atid=540830 > > > > > > > > > these > features > would > be > good > too: > > > > > > > > > > > http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1865789&group_id=74382&atid=540833 > > > > > > > http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1857168&group_id=74382&atid=540833 > > > > > > > > > I > have > some > ideas > on > others; > if > you > want > to > take > on > another > one, > just > > > > > mention > it > here > as > I > may > have > some > thoughts > already > on > the > solution > > > > > which > might > help. > > > > > > > > > Thanks! > > > > > steven > > > > > > > > > On > Jan > 16, > 2008 > 9:06 > AM, > Michael > Bechard > <got...@ya...> > wrote: > > > > > > > Yeah, > sounds > fine, > but > I > don't > think > I > can > change > task > assignment > > > on > > > > > sourceforge, > since > I'm > not > a > project > admin. > I > can, > though, > just > post > > > > > here > and > let > you > know > what > I'm > trying > to > work > on. > > > > > > > > > > > > > Also, > are > there > any > specific > issues > you'd > rather > I > work > on?
