Moving the camera

The camera can be controlled by the keyboard, mouse, a 3d space mouse, with the compass, by bookmarks, by a camera path or with the goto function of layers and exif overlays.

Keyboard

The keyboard has three zone's for placing the hand:

  • W,A,S,D for movement,
  • Q/E for rotation,
  • R/F for tilt,
  • X/C for altitude changes

or

  • arrow keys for movement,
  • 0/1 on NUMPAD for rotation,
  • page up/page down for tilt

or

  • 8,4,2,6 on NUMPAD for movement,
  • / and * on NUMPAD for rotation,
  • page up/page down for tilt,
  • +/- on NUMPAD for altitude changes

With Space, one can reset the camera position and rotation.

Mouse

  • left button is for movement, which is done by dragging the ground
  • right button is for zooming to the clicked point on the ground
  • wheel is for changing the altitude
  • a double click on the ground moves the camera to the selected position
  • middle button
    • vertical movement is for tilting the camera
    • horizontal movement is for rotating around the clicked position

Compass

The red compass in the lower right corner of the 3d view is enabled by default and can be disabled on the overlay tab. It has multiple regions that can be clicked or dragged with the left mouse button. Those regions are highlighted if the mouse moves over them. The inner parts are only visible if the mouse is close to them.

  • the outer ring can be dragged to change the orientation
  • the ā€˜N’ can be clicked to orient the camera back to north
  • the second ring can be dragged to change the camera tilt
  • the button in the center controls the behavior of the innermost ring, click on it to change it
    • if the center button shows four arrows, the innermost ring can be dragged to move the camera forward, backward, left or right
    • if the center button shows an eye, the innermost ring can be dragged to change orientation and pitch at once

Fly mode

The camera mode can be changed in the [Address bar], after it was added with configure orientation accessible under the [Menu button]. In fly mode, the camera behaves like in some games.

  • a click into the 3d view captures the mouse and enables the controls
  • the ESC key frees the mouse again
  • WASD are for forward/backward movement and for sliding left and right
  • mouse movements are for looking around
  • mouse wheel increases or decreases movement speed

3D space mouse

  • Tilt forward or backwards changes the tilt of the camera.
  • Rotation changes the rotation of the camera.
  • Pushing forward, backward, left or right is for movement.
  • Pulling up or pushing down changes the altitude.
  • Every usable button can be used, to reset the camera's position.

Position and orientation

Enter a position and orientation directly in the [Address bar] or in the Configure position dialog found under the [Menu button].

Bookmarks

Together with other scene settings, bookmarks capture the camera position and orientation. A click on a bookmark moves the camera back to that state.

Camera paths

Camera paths consist of keyframes with a position and orientation, between keyframes the camera position is interpolated. A click into the camera path in the camera path panel moves the camera to that location. The camera is also moved if the path is played through the animation tools in the toolbar or by stepping through the keyframes with the forward and backward buttons.

Goto function

Layers and exif overlays have a goto right-click function, that moves the camera above the layer or to the recorded gps position and orientation of a selected exif photo.
