Editing fields in the high-level editor whose bodies contained mixed content (text and XML mixed together) can lead to incorrect results:
1) The markup opening tag (<) is always treated as text when saving changes to the field. As a result it is always replaced with < in the XML file. This effectively eliminates any internal markup from being treated as markup after a save occurs.
2) Markup closing tags (>) are not changed to > when changes are saved. This could break some readers, especially since the opening tags do get converted.
3) More generally, some edits appear to cause strange behaviors. In one case it was noted that, instead of replacing the contents of a field, the changed text was appended to the original unchanged text within the XML.
Consider this example:

<cdf:description>Use mentoring resources to guide your relationship with the Apprentice.</cdf:description>
<cdf:rationale>Apprenticeship is a form of mentoring relationship. The success of the Apprenticeship depends to some extent on how well the Leader relates to the Apprentice. In a successful mentoring relationship, the mentor facilitates the learning of the mentee. Applying this to an Apprenticeship suggests that the Leader can add value to the Apprenticeship practice by realizing that he or she is in a mentoring role to some extent. In this role, the Leader will facilitate learning in addition to transferring knowledge. Mentoring resources can help you to facilitate
learning.</cdf:rationale>
<cdf:fixtext>
According to Brookfield [Brookfield-1986], effective facilitation of learning involves five conditions: (1) voluntary engagement of both partners; (2) mutual respect for individuality; (3) collaboration; (4) critical reflection; and (5)
empowerment of the learner.

The above rule, as part of a larger document, was loaded into the Benchmark Editor. The fixtext field was then modified, moving the second paragraph including its two trailing <xhtml:br/> tags (starting [Brookfield-1986]) until just before the sixth paragraph (starting [Ambrose-1998]). The file was then saved. The resulting rule looked like the
following:

Note:
1) There are now three <xhtml:br /> tags leading the fixtext content. It is unclear where these have come from since the beginning of the field was not edited. Note also that these three markup tags remain markup - they were not converted to text.
2) Note that all other < characters were converted to <
3) Note that NO > characters were converted
4) Note the concatination of the modified version of the field to the original. The concatination point is immediatly following the period in the following text: "... Guide in the top left panel.According to Brookfield [Brookfield-1986],
