Just one question if I may
I installed and I think I chose the wrong graphics, ie, I should have said
OpenGL. As it happens what I did select is playing havoc with my mouse and
the interface. Could this be the problem?

Not to waste too much of your time.
All I'm describing is that the cursor jerks and flies around all over the
place and the interface either responds very slowly or not at all to mouse
clicks.
I agree that it may be a combination graphics drivers and sheer stupidity
on my part.
