It is because Appupdater tries to load sources during the first start and can't connect to Internet. We have access to Internet in office only over proxy and this error do not let me to change proxy settings (however I have done this be editing ini file manually).
Appupdater is supposed to detect your proxy settings from the registry. Unfortunately this doesn't work if you are using a script (.pac) file for configuration, is that your case?
This is actually a duplicate of ID: 3590776 "Crash when socket hangs with proxy" please make further comments there.
