After installing the RC3 windows we've noticed that the display machine
windows seem much "slower" than our old node used to be. Vikas from
UIC/EVL mentioned he has noticed that too. this becomes apparent when
in a group with lots of video sources (e.g AG Lobby or SCG nanocruise with
over 40 video streams).
There are several changes we made:
Added SP2 to W2K (old node was base)
Put on most current unified drivers for G400-AGP Dual and G200 quad
PCI (5.3.006)
Installed most current unified bios for G400/G200 (setup208.exe dated
June 11, 2001. I am assuming these changes are completely
contained on the cards themselves, right? (I mean, if I restore the
W2K I assume I don't have to redo the bios install).
The ddvic is probably the same one I was using before (from 2000-1218).
We are now using MS IE instead of Netscape but I doubt that makes a
difference.
I think the rest of the settings are similar to what we had but I use a
swappable drive so may need to go back and recheck stuff (e.g.
1024x768 screens with 32 bit color).
I've also noticed if I try to start the task manager (e.g. to get to
performance) that the vic windows tend to stop drawing at all.
Gets ugly fast so I don't do that! ;-)
I wanted to document this in case others are seeing this. Our old node
was running very old software (before the heartbeat xrms!) but I tried to
keep up with the ddvic versions. If there are specific things I should try
or compare please let me know. Marty

I've been having a similiar problem. At certain times, my
window managment all but dies, my CPU pegs out, and the
drawing of the images ceases.
On some advice from Bob Olson, I paid attention to the loss
rates in the main vic window, and did indeed notice that
when these problems occurred, I was showing greater than
10% loss on the main vic window.
I'm still unsure of the cause, and unsure of the effect (ie
don't know the source of the problem.) But I do see the
correlation. Do you happen to notice this behavior on your
node as well? (The high loss rates on the main vic window
when the slowness occurs.)
