Open Source Digital Preservation Software

Planets is a four year project co-funded by the European Commission to address core digital preservation challenges. The project has developed a suite of tools and services to support preservation of and access to digital content in the long term.

Curator Archiving Tool is an open source software aimed to manage efectively the proccesses of human cataloguing, publish the digital resources on thematic directories and collections and offer statistical information of added value to end users.

The Dependency Discovery Tool searches through binary office files (.doc, .xls and .ppt) and tries to find any documents or files that are linked to the document. It is written in java, using the Apache POI libraries ( http://poi.apache.org ) This project was part of a summer scholarship from the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Victoria University, Wellington (http://ecs.vuw.ac.nz) in conjunction with Archives New Zealand ( http://archives.govt.nz ). At the moment it requires Java 6 to build and run, but this should change soon, and it will run on Java 5 upwards.

The Emulation Framework offers a convenient way to render digital files in their native computer environment. The EF is software developed in Java by the international KEEP project, co-funded by the European Unions 7th Framework Programme.
