PDF.js is a web standards-based platform for parsing and rendering Portable Document Formats (PDFs). Open source and built with HTML5, this PDF viewer is supported by a great community and Mozilla Labs. PDF.js can be used on both modern and older browsers, and is built into version 19+ of Firefox.

Pdf-extractor is a wrapper around pdf.js to generate images, svgs, html files, text files and json files from a pdf on node.js. A DOM Canvas is used to render and export the graphical layer of the pdf. Canvas exports *.png as a default but can be extended to export to other file types like .jpg. Pdf objects are converted to svg using the SVGGraphics parser of pdf.js. Pdf text is converted to HTML.

...To make it easier to reproduce the contents of the PDF at a later date the original notebook is attached to the PDF. Unfortunately not all PDF viewers know how to deal with attachments. PDF viewers known to support downloading of file attachments are: Acrobat Reader, pdf.js and evince. The pdftk CLI program can also extract attached files from a PDF. Preview for OSX does not know how to display/give you access to attachments of PDF files.
