I cannot install MikTex 2.8 in my Windows XP SP3 Professional. I have tried
the net install and the basic package download. The installation always fails
with an error like this (from the log file of the installation program):

    extracting files from miktex-graphics-bin-2.8.tar.lzma...

    extracting files from miktex-gsf2pk-base.cab...

    extracting files from miktex-gsf2pk-bin-2.8.tar.lzma...

    extracting files from miktex-hunspell-bin-2.8.tar.lzma...

    An error occurred:

    source file: Libraries\MiKTeX\Core\win\winFile.cpp

    source line: 270

message: Windows API error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

    info: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.8\tpm\packages\miktex-hunspell-bin-2.8.tpm

I have seen that this topic rises again and again in the forum and there is no
answer in any of the ocassions that this problem is notified. Any help
    appreciated.

I just managed to resolve this problem on my computer. Disconnect from the
internet entirely while you are installing it. It may also help to turn off
any network security programs that are running (a.k.a. Cisco Clean Access).

This is how I got it working on mine. I hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay in my answer. First of all, thank you very much for your
answer. I tried to install the program disabling the LAN connection, but the
    result is the same:

    An error occurred:
    source file: Libraries\MiKTeX\Core\win\winFile.cpp
    source line: 270
message: Windows API error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

    info: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.8\tpm\packages\miktex-mktex-bin-2.8.tpm

I haven't got any security program running, such as an antivirus or anything
like that. I have disconnected the Windows firewall. Another thing is that the
failure occurs randomly. That is, I have observed that tpm file which the
installation program complains about is not always the same. For instance, the
las time I run the setup program the package at which the installation failed
    was: miktex-ghostcript-base.tpm.

    Best regards.

I too have encountered this problem The MikTeX Setup Wizard reports the
    following error:

The operation could not be completed for the following reason:
Windows-API error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
    Details: C:\Program Files\MikTeX 2.8\tpm\packages\miktex-bin-2.8.tpm

The machine I am attempting to install it on is a fresh XP Professional
install, running SP3 and version 3.5 SP1 of the .NET framework. The very same
installer has no problem on another machine running the same service pack and
framework, so it appears to be a machine-specific problem.

Yeah, I remember that headache of it constantly screwing up in different
places. Might have just been a stroke of God's grace that it installed on
    mine....

The only other natural solution I could give you (as unusual as it may sound)
may have to do with how long the computer has been on. When I got mine
installed, it was the very first thing I did once I turned the computer on. It
might or might not change anything. Give it a shot. It's worth a try.

I have tried to install the program with the machine recently booted. If it
can help, it is a VMWare Machine, but I don't think that has much to do.

Sorry about the delay in response.

Unfortunately, I am limited on what I know about computer programming. I've
just learned a few tricks over the years that sometimes work, and sometimes
    they don't.

    I would just keep trying.

    Hi

I might be able to help. I had the same problem at installing Miktex-Basic in
a notebook with XP SP3. Most probable cause is a corrupted file. So, I
downloaded (in my case) miktex-zzdb1-2.8.tar.lzma, miktex-zzdb2-2.8.tar.lzma
and miktex-hunspell-bin-2.8.tar.lzma from a repository for instance:
    http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/CTAN/systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/

I moved them to the installation sub-directory. Run again Miktex2.8 Net
Installer and this time the installation went fine.

    Hello.

Thank you so much for your answer. I cannot try if it works or not right now
because I am working at home because of the weather (too much ice on the
road), but I will try your solution as soon as I can.

    Regards.

    Hi all,

I too have a similar problem to the one outlined above. When trying to install
MikTex 2.8 (from both net and basic installer) I get the following message:

    An error occurred:
    source file: Libraries\MiKTeX\Core\win\winFile.cpp
    source line: 694
    message: Permission denied: C:\Programme\MiKTeX 2.8\miktex/bin/atl90.dll
    info: C:\Programme\MiKTeX 2.8\miktex/bin/atl90.dll

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

    Best,

    David

    Hello, Marcohp22.

It worked!!! I did what you told me.

    1) I downloaded the file about which the install program complained. In my
    case "miktex-dict-english.tar.lzma"
    2) I started the installation process and before the install program got to
that file, I copied the file to its destination directory: "C:\Program
    Files\MiKTeX 2.8-2\tpm\packages".
    3) The installation program extracted the .tpm file from the .lzma and
    everything was fine.

I have to check if it works properly, because I haven't tested it yet. The
only thing I have for sure is that the installation program didn't fail.

    Thank you very much!!!

    Hello.

Just wanted to tell you that I have worked with MikTex the last few days and
it worked properly (I am using it in conjunction wi TexNicCenter). Again,
thank you so much for your support. The best of all is that the rest of the
people that has trouble instaling MiKTeX will have a simple workaround.

    Best Regards.

Just in case others run into similar problems. I have had the same problem
with .tpm files that weren't found during install although they have been
there, packed in the .lzma files. My installation was on Windows Server 2008.
Additionally - although rarer than the above i had the install program
breaking on a different error (no description was given of that though). I
tried moving the package repository to C:\MiktexRep which was mentioned
elsewhere and it didn't help but then i ran the setup program as administrator
in windows XP SP3 compatibility mode and that worked out ... got no errors
anymore. I can just hope that this will help others, because spending so much
time installing is not what i am used to ;-)

Wow! I finally got a**** Miktex installed. What a pain in the ass that
was. 3 days of lifetime went into that, Lol.
What worked for me was the workaround first mentioned by marcoph22 and then
    further explained by manologondor

    marcoph:

Try this and your odysee might just be over...

I encountered the same problem when installing MiKTeX 2.9 under WIndows XP
SP3, namely the installation failed on a missing tpm file in C:\Program
    Files\MikTeX 2.9\tpm\packages\ .
I downloaded a fresh copy of the installer program (basic-miktex-2.9.4250.exe
in my case), and it installed without any problems. I suspect that the initial
    download was corrupted.
