Hi All,
I cannot access the wiki on the website.
I would like to install geoqo on my new opensuse box and try to see if
1.11 can give me the incentive to pick geocaching again.
But i don't seem to get past the dbd::sqlite installer

It's been a while, but I actually have been working on GeoQO now and then. Recently geocaching.com announced that they're including attributes (finally!!!) in the pocket query gpx file. So, it seemed like a good time to produce a release. The full list of changes is below. Get it from: https://sourceforge.net/projects/geoqo/files/geoqo/1.1/ New in version 1.1: - Groundspeak (geocaching) attributes now importable, searchable, displayable and exportable - You can import directly from mail messages using the base64 import plugin (for those of you using procmail: auto database updates!) - Waypoint identifier names can be printed on the map output - Search the database by identifiers from a file using the 'file' plugin - A new 'returnhome' search plugin that extras track and waypoint data from your GPS, finds the identifiers you were next to and - A new 'gps' search plugin that searches for all the waypoints currently loaded in your gps. then displays the results. - More fixes for internationalization support. - Bugs fixed when searching by track data when returning home -- \ Wes Hardaker http://pontifications.hardakers.net / \_____ "In the bathtub of history the truth is harder to hold than ________/ \_______ the soap, and much more difficult to find." _______/ \_________ -- Terry Pratchett ______________/ \__________________/ |

Hi, I would like to make geoqo the tool of my coice, moving away from my own collection of scripts, which would mean that I would probably also contribute patches back. However, that means I also would like geoqo to be a success and to be used by more than the number of users the mailing list traffic suggests. IMHO, the biggest problem of geoqo at the moment is the number of dependencies on software which is usually not packaged for any given distribution. I know of the Linux-binary thing and I think it is a nice and neat way to circumvent that, but only for a short term. In the end, users might want to change scripts for their own and 'build' geoqo themselfes and they end up with the dependencies again. Also running an elf-executable from somewhere on the web does not feel all that good. My point is: would it be possible and desired to try to remove some of the non-essential dependencies, probably by including some of the code of external modules into geoqo? I know that this basically mean a code duplication, but in some cases the removed dependency might be worth it. The ultimate goal would be to have geoqo included in e.g. Debian. That would require all dependencies to be included as well, and at the moment quite a few are missing - not packaged yet. Frank Loeffler |

I'm happy to announce 1.0 of GeoQO. It's been a long journey to get to
the 1.0 stage, but I think it's running quite well on linux. I was
hoping 1.0 would have more windows support, but I think that's coming
soon... (I really need a dedicated windows developer to help me).
New in version 1.0:
- Added a density plot option to the open-street-map based mapping feature
- Internationalization text fixes
(It should now display caches/waypoints from all languages correctly)
- The map display now has a 528-foot circle diagram for showing
cache boundaries for use when placing new caches.
- Added a --remember flag to auto-save searches to a specific named-search.
(Use mem:name to recall it in a future search)

I had a sudden burst of getting things done this week and I'm happy to
say that I both have an easy-to-use binary (no installing of anything
else, it just works!) and instructions for installing it (targeted
toward ubuntu, but it should work for any linux). Here's the NEWS
snippit and a link to the instructions:
(make sure to check out the mapping feature!)
New in version 0.99:
- A new map button in the gui to display maps from open street maps
- Maps now display icons
- More GUI simplification for people not setting the advanced preference
- worked through a few chicken-and-egg problems for new users
- The easy-to-install binary for linux has been tested from scratch
on ubuntu and now contains icons, gpsbabel and cmconvert embedded
within it
- Bunches of other bugs fixed
And the linux installation instructions:

So I've been tinkering off and on over time, and I ran across something that lets me offer a complete single executable for people to use. IE, no more installing of a zillion pre-requisites... You just download and run. Sourceforge has, um, messed a few things up with some of the online web pages so they're still out of date till I fix them. Installation instructions for using a linux binary release (easy!) http://www.geoqo.org/wiki/index.php/Install_from_a_binary_release Let me know how it works for you. The first run will be a bit slow in starting as it extracts a bunch of files (to /tmp). New in version 0.98: - New export module: 'map' for creating a png map based on openStreetMaps - New display module: bounds for displaying lat/lon boundaries of a set - Many of the more complex gui options hidden unless you have the advanced preference set. - New ability to compile completely self-contained binaries - Bunches of bugs fixed -- "In the bathtub of history the truth is harder to hold than the soap, and much more difficult to find." -- Terry Pratchett |

Fred, You shouldn't need to be a registered user to post a message. *If* you're subscribed to the mailing list, however, it'll automatically accept messages from you. You sent another message in the past that got caught in the moderator queue because you weren't subscribed to the list. I normally look at the queue regularly and approve real messages (it's normally mostly spam) but in this case I've been away for 2 weeks on a work/vacation trip.... So, sorry for the delay! I am a registered user (fred felter) so I believe I can post a question however I don't see any way to input my password for permission. I am also a new Linux user and am having a great deal of difficulty installing GeoQO. I've managed to get GeoQO and Perl 5.10.0 on my desktop but when I do a Perl /check I get no such file response. I also have no idea of what to do with the GeoQo folder which contains various files, now of which seems to open a useable GUI to input data. Help please and thanks in advance. |

I am new to Linux and am starting to use Ubuntu. Geoqo looks like a great app to continue my hobby of geocaching with. I think I managed to install the perl, sqlite and CPAN elements simply by copying and pasting the terminal commands for the Debian distro from the web site. Now I come to "unpack" Geoqo but the subsequent lines starting with the .tar.gz in Terminal result in a Not Found response. I also managed to download the 0.97 tar.gz version to my desktop but when I open it I see no folders suggesting I could open the program itself. I'm stuck! Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The easiest thing to do would probably be to convert the information to to a loc format and load it into geoqo if you want to use it's GE output. The easiest way, probably, to do that is export the data into a CSV format that looks like this: 38.75705, -120.52890, A name for the point 38.55778, -121.67105, A name for this other point (the names can be anything). Then use gpsbabel to convert them to a .loc file: gpsbabel -i csv -f INPUT_FILE.csv -o geo -F OUTPUT_FILE.loc Then you should be able to get geoqo to load them: geoqo -i OUTPUT_FILE.loc And finally plot the results: geoqo -s any: -e for_google_earth.kml -- "In the bathtub of history the truth is harder to hold than the soap, and much more difficult to find." -- Terry Pratchett |

It's been quite a while since I've made a geoqo release. A few new things and a number of bug fixes have been put in place. I'm trying to work to a real 1.0 release, but I haven't had the time lately to sink into the tasks I want to complete to make that happen. Here's the NEWS about 0.97: New in version 0.97: - A new import plugin "dir" for importing an entire directory of files - Database searching using a track can now use data beyond a given date/time - A number of small bug fixes. Well, 0.9 has a completely new GUI system so if you were disappointed by the lack of functionality in the last one, definitely check out the 0.9 release. Also, the windows install script has been extensively tested works well. (in fact, previous versions in general likely barely worked at all under windows... This one has been tested and improved quite a bit under windows and should be fully functional now). -- "In the bathtub of history the truth is harder to hold than the soap, and much more difficult to find." -- Terry Pratchett |

There is a new geoqo version (0.8) available from the download site. It's been a few months since the last release. A number of big improvements have been made in a few areas, though the GUI is still lacking the most. (the command line interface is much more powerful). There is a new windows installation script which should help the windows users tremendously. I just published 0.7, which is been due for too long...
The most interesting new feature is the ability to rate caches (and
upload your ratings to a server, as well as download and view the
average of other people's ratings)
New in version 0.7:
- a cache rating system
(and publication)
- embedded perl sections can be placed directly into scripts
- the top10 display module can calculate an average as well.
- the top10 display module can run a separate script on every result
- yet more gui support
- in particular, check out the cache tagging and rating screen
- installation paths are configurable thanks to lairsdragon
(installed scripts, for example)
- a usable preferences screen
