After years of source-only access to modifications and "private" releases, it is time for a complete public release. Besides a few pure maintainance modifications 1.12 comes with multitenancy support, views, support for Visio designed maps. As usual, BigSister is available from http://www.bigsister.ch/stable.html Kind regards, Tom Aeby -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thomas Aeby, Kirchweg 52, 1735 Giffers, Switzerland Voice : (+41)26 4180040 Internet: ae...@gr... As requested by many of the list members, the BigSister mailing lists now accept postings only from subscribed members. We hope that this will eliminate the problem with the increasing frequency of spam postings without interfering with the intended use of the list too much. If you are one of those list members that used to use another sender address for posting than that you use for receiving mails, please either subscribe the mail address you use for sending or configure your mail application so that you can use the subscribed address on outgoing mail. While Big Sister is and will always be a non-commercial freeware software project it is however linked with non-commercial and commercial real world. The Big Sister project web site tries to feature this links a little bit more than in the past. You might need help in deploying Big Sister, guaranteed response to problems you get or other external support. In this case you might want to have a look at http://www.bigsister.ch/profis.html, a page listing companies offering professional services around Big Sister. If you are interested in 3rd party products that work with Big Sister, then http://www.bigsister.ch/3rdprods.html might be worth a look. Companies providing Big Sister related professional services are invited to have a look at http://www.bigsister.ch/register_prof.html Support for a specific device, health check or another feature is absolutely crucial for you? Donating a device for the development lab or earmarked money for the development team will change the order on the priority list. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas Aeby, Kirchweg 52, 1735 Giffers, Switzerland, Tel: (+41)264180040 Internet: ae...@gr... Release 1.02 comes with rather unspectacular new functionality. Besides the new performance data database allowing Big Sister to display more expressive charts (see http://www.bigsister.ch/snapshots.html) and simple statistical analysis of trends, the new SLA report generator does now process collected availability data into management readable form. A few new health checks have been implemented - such as the new ping test collecting line performance data, a file access performance test, the BT-Ethernetbox test monitoring environmental data (see http://www.messpc.de/) and a new interface for custom-made health checks. Of course, a number of bugs have also been fixed. The Big Sister Agent MSI package for Windows is now considered stable. Unfortunately, the promised availability of the complete Big Sister suite as an MSI package had to be postponed to release 1.03. The manual revision 1.9 is included in the released packages and is mostly in sync with Big Sister release 1.02 - the brand new SLA report generator lacks some documentation, though. Revision 2 of the Big Sister Agent for Windows MSI package fixes an annoying problem: If running as a service the agent stopped whenever a user interactively logged out of the Windows machines console. The agent 1.00rev2 now ignores user logoffs as one would expect from a background service. As usual, you can download the package from http://www.bigsister.ch/unstable.html Best regards, Tom -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas Aeby, Kirchweg 52, 1735 Giffers, Switzerland, Tel: (+41)264180040 Internet: ae...@gr... The official Big Sister manual has been brought up to date. Release 1.9 of the manual is in sync with the development version of Big Sister and the forthcoming 1.01 release. Besides numerous other changes the manual includes a new health check reference section as well as a chapter on the new database backend. The PDF manual is available from http://www.joerg.cc/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BigSister - the HTML version will follow in a few days. An up-to-date release of the ".exe"-Version of Big Sister has been promised long ago. Now, we just have made a big step forward to achieving this: a pre-release of the Agent for Windows is ready for download at http://www.bigsister.ch/unstable.html Note that we are going to release Big Sister for Windows as MSI package in the future starting from now. Please have a look at it, test it, comment it. We need your feedback. Special thanks go to Simon Moser, who dived into MSI packaging, to both Ernesto Haberli and Joaquim Homrighausen for sponsoring development tools, to everyone else that did some sponsoring or at least thought about it. I am currently completely re-designing Big Sister's project page. In order to also provide infos for those Big Sister admins, that need a helping hand either helping them implementing monitoring using Big or even doing some custom development, I'd like to add a page listing companies that provide commercial services around Big Sister. If you represent such a company please consider sending me a notice, if you no of one, please forward them this request. >From the respective section on the forthcoming new home page: "Is your company providing professional services around Big Sister and you would like to be listed here? Please send me a note. We need the name of your company, an URL pointing to its web site, a short description of your company's focus, the location, a short description about what your company can offer for customer's needing professional help around Big Sister and - last but not least - an URL pointing to a page within your web site that is focusing on Big Sister. The latter is a requirement. We reserve our right to refuse listing companies that we consider not being valuable for Big Sister users. Send your application via E-Mail to reg...@bi...." Have you already wondered if there will ever be a new release? It is finally there. 0.99c3 focusses on solving a few issues, adds some monitoring modules that have been available via=20 http://software.graeff.com/bigsis-modules/ for a while. For the first time, we have released Debian packages for Big Sister. You can download them from http://www.bigsister.ch/ or add deb http://software.graeff.com/debian-graeff/ sarge main to your sources.list in order to get them via apt. Oh, and obviously we have been looking for a shorter URL, so the Big Sister home page is now reachable via http://www.bigsister.ch/ The promised up-to-date Windows binaries are still not available. We attempt to release them within the next two or three months. Out of the CHANGES.PLAINTEXT file: 14.06.04: RELEASE 0.99c3 - supports debian packages - bsmodule: use correct paths in etc/moduleinfo/files - bstrapd: more effort to get usable trap logs, and fixed some bugs - init script: ignore RPM/Debian package manager generated=20 "config files" - SNMP trap sending on status changes: %StatusTrap in bb-display.cfg - server supports "summary" protocol command (BB compatibility) - timeout and warntimeout is now configurable for TCP based tests - proxy support in realhttp test - new oracle, mysql, mailq and ldap tests (thanks to Gert Dewit) - bsadmin allows sending perf data Best regards, Tom Aeby --=20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= - Thomas Aeby, Kirchweg 52, 1735 Giffers, Switzerland, Tel: (+41)264180040 Internet: ae...@gr... Unfortunately a silly and very nasty bug has found its way into 0.99b1. So I decided to immediately skip forward to 0.99b2. So release 0.99 beta 2 is available for download right now. Big Sister is an SNMP aware cross-platform system and network monitoring application. For the current release the Windows specific code has been brought up-to-date and tested against newer versions of Windows. Many special thanks go to Joaquim Homrighausen of Webbplatsen, who sponsored the Windows port. His words: "Sponsored by WebbPlatsen i Sverige, Stockholm Sweden. Free your mind, free the source. Thanks to Thomas for all his work with BigSister." Besides bringing code up-to-date and in sync with the Unix version, the new release 0.99b1 brings along many bug fixes in the Windows port as well as in the Unix/Linux version. Of course, you'll find the release on http://bigsister.graeff.com/ as usual. Subject: [Bigsister-announce] big sister documentation: Unix question
hello,
i was reading the documentation and like i always
do i usually take the instructions for linux to stand
for unix also. i know this approaches does not always work
therefore i thought to ask a few questions. just for clarity,
i noticed the powered by sun logo on CPAN's web site. i have
solaris 8 and 9 on my systems and wondered if it is necessary
for me to download the modules from CPAN? there is a large
amount of modules listed on that site, which modules are
mandatory and recommended for big sister? finally, i have perl
v5.8.0 from sunfreeware.com, is this is sufficient for big sister,
and does it meet the module requirement.

Big Sister is an SNMP aware network and system monitoring application. Release 0.98c8 is a production/stable release mainly fixing a few portability issues and other bugs discovered since 0.98c7 release. Fixed problems include - Solaris issues (TCP monitor crashes, swap monitor) - AIX issues (cpu load monitor) - perl <5.6 issues (Big Sister works with Perl <5.6 again) - Rsync failures - "users" monitor failures - .... a few others ... ------------------------------RELEASE NOTES----------------------------- Big Sister 0.98 c8 (stable) Release Notes =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D This is a bug fix release. The only new feature included is the NUT UPS monitor also released for 0.98c7 as an installable module. Made SystemV sar monitor AIX compatible. Fixed FQDN handling. Switch to FQDN now via "DEFAULT fqdn=3Dyes ALL" in uxmon-net. Added the NUT UPS monitor. The 'realhttp' test got two extra arguments: "extraheaders" and "extraheadersvalue" allowing to send custom headers. Made logging via syslog more robust. It should now behave a little bit more reasonable on systems where the Perl syslog module fails to use Unix domain sockets. Fixed high granularity time measurement. It now works on every platform where Perl >=3D5.8 is installed and does not crash on platforms that do not support the gettimeofday() system call. Added swap monitor implementation for Solaris so that we get a swap memory usage on this platform, too. Fixed the "users" sensor. The RPM now creates the Big Sister user "bigsis" in the system=20 users' uid space. Fixed %Rsync which was broken since version 0.98beta4. The default config files are those provided by Herb Rubin. uxmon command now shows a Usage string when invoked with wrong arguments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= - Thomas Aeby, Kirchweg 40, 1735 Giffers, Switzerland, Voice : (+41)26 4180040 Internet: ae...@gr... We have just released the latest monitoring module. The "nut" module monitors uninterruptable power supplies under control of the NUT (Network UPS Tools) free software suite. It sends alerts on power breakages, overload and battery problems. The longterm graphing may point you to battery aging problems. The "nut" module is currently beta. You can install it on top of Big Sister 0.97c7 using the "bsmodule" command, either use "bsmodule install nut" directly, to retrieve and install the nut module via the Big Sister download server or download it manually from http://software.graeff.com/bigsis-modules/nut.mod and install the file using "bsmodule". The nut module contains the test "nutups" you can add to your uxmon-net file. Use "/usr/share/bigsister/bin/testers -t nutups" in order to get a short explanation of the arguments the nutups test provides. --=20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= - Thomas Aeby, Kirchweg 40, 1735 Giffers, Switzerland, Voice : (+41)26 4180040 Internet: ae...@gr... After a long time of major code rewrites we are pleased to finally announce a new Big Sister production/stable release. Many new features, the completely rewritten documentation and the revised look&feel have made their way into the world of stable releases, therefore. If you have still be running the previous stable release (0.97) please go through the release notes of the various 0.98 releases in order to find the numerous changes documented, if you were already running on of the 0.98 series releases you will find out that only a few bug fixes have been made between the latest beta and the new production release. Thanks for your patience and your support throughout the years! The 0.98c7 Release notes have been attached for completeness ... Best regards, Tom Aeby ============================snipp===================================== Big Sister 0.98 c 7 (stable) Release Notes ========================================== No features have been added between beta6 and c7. Please read release notes for the 0.98b series to find out what has changed between the last production release (0.97) and this production release. The latest version of the Big Sister docu is distributed with this release. The new default skin (techie) is now compatible with Internet Explorer. Spurious false-positives (mainly TCP based tests) caused by a uxmon malfunction have been fixed. Hangs in the start script during bsmon startup have been fixed. Graphical image maps did not always update correctly on status change and therefore under some circumstances have reflected false status colors. This has been fixed. The history CGI now remembers the selected detail level. When running 'make install-client' only the Big Sister modules being included in the release are not installed. The make procedure now displays the suggestion to additionally run 'make install-modules'. -- |

My problem appears to be actually getting the files. I am sent to the = mirror sites then get a 404. A quick check at the root level shows that = the files are not there. Hello,
after facing the problems with RedHat 9 I decided to immediately release
0.98beta5 before hundreds of downloaders run into the same problems.
The changes included with 0.98beta5 are merely:
- output a warning when running with Perl 5.8 with UTF-8 support
enabled (well, that does not solve the problem but at least people
get aware of it)
- fixed the argument parsing bug in the CGIs
Thanks to Michael Gastright who not only reported the problem but also
has spent quite some time testing my suggestions.
Best regards,
Tom
